Helping alleviate hardship and distress since 1858 |
| The railway charity was formed as the Railway Benevolent Institution in 1858 to provide support to
railway staff (active and retired) and their dependents when they needed help through illness, injury, bereavement, or adversity. It also ran two orphanages
for children of railway families. Over the years the needs of the industry have changed, and to reflect this, from February 2006 the charity is known as
The Railway Benefit Fund. |
| The Railway Benefit Fund offers financial help in the following ways: |
- Annuities where there is a low income.
“...without your help Mum could not have stayed in the Nursing Home” |
- Care grants to meet any shortfall in residential/nursing home fees.
“...a very big thank you for the generosity you have shown. I took possession of the mobility scooter and for the first time in many months have been able to leave the house alone.” |
- Helping disabled people with the costs of powered vehicles and making life easier for them by providing
mobility aids.
“When your cheque arrived and my mother realised she was able to pay the funeral costs, it was the first time I saw a hint of a smile on her face, as
she knew that she could now do right for my dad.
” |
- Covering the shortfalls in funeral expenses.
“I simply could not believe the amount of the cheque which you sent me (£750). I feel like a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders.” |
- Providing grants to staff who are suffering long term sickness or who have had to retire early through
ill health and to retired staff and their dependents.
“...the financial support I received went a long way in helping a working-class boy become a working-class hero in the eyes of his retired guard father.” |
- Child care grants to help with the costs of higher education, equipment, school clothing etc. for
parents with financial problems.
